Dec 05, 2018 · It is very useful for any mechanical engineer to be aware of 4130 steel properties. 4130 steel, otherwise known as Chromoly or chromium molybdenum steel alloy, is made with 0.8 to 1.1% chromium and 0.15 to 0.25% molybdenum as strengthening agents. steel properties make it a versatile metal, especially mechanical properties such as high ductility, good weldability, and the fact it can be
Jun 08, 2011 · Heat-treatment results (hardness, microstructure, properties) are dependent on such factors as the exact material chemistry, part section thickness and the method of heat treatment. For 4130 steel, the recommended heat treatment consists of heating to austenitizing temperature, typically 1600°F (870°C), followed by water quenching. 4130 vs 4340 Steel Comparison Capital Steel & Wire4130 and 4340 are both popular steel grades at Capital Steel & Wire. Below is a chemical and mechanical properties comparison of both grades of steel as it may be of value for machining purposes and as a resource for purchasing 4130 and 4340 steel.
Alloy 4130 (AISI 4130) is a chromium molybdenum alloy steel. Alloy 4130 is a widely used Aircraft Steel due to its weldability, ease of fabrication and mild hardenability. The hardenability and weldability of Alloy 4130 are considered equivalent to 8630 (MIL-S-6250) . Alloy 4130 is also vacuum degassed to meet the magnetic particle inspection AISI Carbon Steel Mechanical Characteristics Table Chart For all critical applications, verify to the applicable industry or requisite material / steel standard. A common carburizing method of AISI SAE 8620 steel is to heat up to 925 °C (1700 °F) at a potential of 0.9% C in a prepared carbon-containing atmosphere, hold for about 4 hours (to reach a depth of 1.3 mm [0.050 in]), and reduce the temperature to 845 °C (1555 °F). The carbon potential is close to eutectoid, maintaining a 1 h diffusion Encore Metals - 4130We stock this quality of E-4130 to meet the regulations of API Spec.6A. Bars are heat treated to Designation 75K and are Charpy V-notch impact- tested to Classification K. Stocks also conform to NACE Standard MROI- 75 with a maximum hardness of HRC22/HB235.

"4140 pre hard" is from my experience RC30 and machines very nicely. It is what comes from McMaster, Enco, or MSC. I have also used "4140 Q&T" and it came through nearer RC 36. I believe Q&T has a spec with it to disclose the hardness as when I ordered it, it was available in two tensile ratings.
The 4140 quenched and tempered bar that Pride Metals stocks is a stronger type of metal with a hardness of 30 to 36 RC. This material has a minimum yield of 110,000 PSI. 4140 QT is relatively easy to machine in the heat-treated state. Our 4330V Mod material is a low alloy steel with a high yield strength of 150,000 PSI. Rockwell C Hardness *32 (Min) Brinell Hardness *302 (Min) e.t.d.® 150® was developed to provide manufacturers a machinable steel bar material, with in-the-bar strength, which they can use to design and produce parts that require higher levels of strength (150,000 psi min tensile and Rc 32 min hardness). Types of Metals to Choose for Machining 2020 [Easy How to Tool Steel:Steel that is specially formulated with the properties needed for tool making, such as high hardness. How much carbon is in carbon steel? Low carbon steel (mild steel) contains 0.04% to 0.3% carbon. Medium carbon steel has 0.31% to 0.6% carbon, making it stronger than low carbon, but also more difficult to form, weld and cut.
Feb 14, 2006 · I have settled on 4130 as it is all that is available short of boring solid round stock. I am considering flame hardening these sleeves to obtain maximum hardness. Wall thickness is .125, 3" O.D. I think that raising the temp to 1600 and then water quench will give me a hardness of at least 35 Rc. Can anyone comment on this.
